Chapter 6, Where Grace and Lucy Found the Gate
________________________________
“Trust in the Lord with all thy heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.”
~ Proverbs 3:5-6
To Grace’s surprise and Lucy’s joy, the once comfortable seat they were sitting on started to move, propelling them forward. It became apparent that the Chevrolet Tahoe had undergone an unbelievable transformation. “Mommy, we are riding a real white bear!” Lucy exclaimed with excitement.
Indeed, they found themselves sitting inside a soft carriage with two rows of seats, secured to the wide back of a huge polar bear. This bear resembled the ones they had previously seen on Animal Kingdom, but this bear was tamed, friendly, and most surprisingly, capable of talking.
“Good morning, welcome to the Kingdom,” greeted the bear with the hospitality of a Wyndham Club agent. “Please, tell me what you want to see and do, and I will take you wherever you’d like. I understand left and right, and much more. By the way, I’m very humble, and I don’t like to boast, but everyone knows you’d never find a better guide than I am in the whole kingdom!”
Lucy couldn’t contain her curiosity and leaned forward from her seat on the second row, trying to get a better look at the bear’s face. Eventually, he turned his head, allowing her to see his serious expression. With a tone of curiosity, Lucy asked, “What is your name?”
“Same as before,” the bear replied in a deliberate and slow manner. “My name is Chevrolet Tahoe. What else did you expect?” Grace couldn’t help but chuckle at his response, and Lucy exclaimed in surprise, “So, now that you’re a real bear, you want us to call you Chevrolet!”
They all laughed together, enjoying the slow and clear bass of Mr. Chevrolet’s laughter. Once the laughter subsided, Lucy asked him, “Mr. Chevrolet, if you really can take us anywhere we want, please take us to my daddy Ray and my sister Sonya.”
“Of course,” Mr. Chevrolet agreed, nodding his head. He started moving a little faster, but still at a comfortable pace. Grace, however, couldn’t help but miss the familiar comfort of a car and the confidence that came with driving. Sitting on the back of a bear felt quite awkward to her, unlike Lucy, who was clearly having a great time.
After a few steps, during which Lucy and Grace fell silent, Mr. Chevrolet spoke up again. “I would like to show you around,” he suggested. “There are many things you will learn about the Kingdom, and they are quite different from the world you’re used to.”With a hint of nervousness, Grace asked, “So, you’re saying we will meet Ray and Sonya here? And is it possible for us to come back? Together?”
“If it’s possible to come here, why wouldn’t it be possible to go back?” Mr. Chevrolet replied, his voice filled with philosophical wisdom. “What do you think?”
Grace admitted, “I’m not sure. But honestly, it’s a bit scary to think about…
I mean, I can’t help but wonder if we were in a collision and accidentally hit that beautiful deer, and now…”
“Oh, really? Do you think we’re in the ER, suffering from a major head injury and collectively dreaming the same dream while doctors are trying to save us, Mommy?
Or maybe we’re sitting on our living room couch, dreaming this dream together? Is that the best you can come up with? What about the cocoons of time? That theory I liked so much better!” Lucy sarcastically retorted, not bothering to hide her irony.
Grace tried to defend herself. “Honey, kidding aside, but this reality does feel fantasy-like. As the wife of a scientist, I should be able to provide rational explanations based on known physics and scientific laws, but this … this is beyond anything I could have ever imagined! . The world has been transformed before my very eyes, defying every fundamental principle I once thought to be absolute …”
Grace’s eyes were widened in awe, she continued, “the colours of the world have changed so brightly, the buildings and roads we used to know, all vanished into thin air, the cars disappeared completely, finally, the animals started to talk and act as if they were human … These are things that defy not only my understanding but the collective knowledge of our scientific community. I find myself questioning the very fabric of reality, as if some cosmic force have rewritten the rules …. and ushered us into alternate existence.” She gasped, yet trying to cope with the overwhelming emotions.
“Mommy, to me it feels absolutely normal, because it is the reality I often see in my dreams .. It is like a fantasy that is already known to me. Don’t you understand? We believed in it and here we are! You taught me that everything is possible to those who believeth … Now we’re in the Kingdom, for real, not in a dream, isn’t it what we were praying for this morning?” Lucy questioned mom, with a tinge of sadness in her voice. “I wish we could see the deer again! Where did it go?”
As soon as Lucy uttered those words, much to their surprise, the doe with honey-colored eyes emerged from the woods. “There she is, our deer!” Lucy cheered.
Since Mr. Chevrolet was walking in a different direction and didn’t pay attention to the deer, Lucy gently patted his side and made him come to a stop, so they could interact with the doe. “Mr. Chevrolet, please wait,” Lucy requested. The bear obediently halted, waiting for the doe to approach.
“Hello,” the doe introduced herself. “My name is Ellin.”
“Hello, Ellin. I’m Grace, and this is my daughter Lucy. I’m so glad to know I didn’t hurt you,” Grace said with relief.
“Please don’t worry,” Ellin replied, her smile warmed their hearts. “You were cautious and caring. That’s one of the reasons you are welcome here. It’s not in your nature to cause harm.”
“Thank you, Ellin. That’s quite a compliment. We would be grateful if you would show us the way back to the Meadow of Light when we need to return,” Grace requested. Concern crossed her face as she glanced back at the dense and unusual forest behind them. There were no signs of the mysterious portal, no road leading out. Only a narrow path among the thick trees reminded Grace of the spot where they had entered the Kingdom, and even that seemed too narrow for a car to pass through.
Ellin seemed oblivious to their worries. She rolled her golden eyes casually, as if coming back and forth through the portal was the easiest thing in the world. “Did I not show you the portal before?” she asked.
“Yes, you did, but now it’s no longer in view,” Grace pointed out, gesturing towards the woods behind them.
Then, unexpectedly, Ellin posed a peculiar question, “Do you truly believe the gate is not in view? It’s important to know if you truly believe it or not.”
“Well… believe it or not, we can’t see the gate,” Grace admitted.
“You won’t see it until you approach it once again. However, if you believe that the portal is where you first entered it, it is very possible that on your way back, you will return to the exact same place and time you came from,” Ellin explained.
Grace responded with excitement, “So, depending on where and when we want to return, we have to be determined and clear about our intentions. We have to know exactly what we want and ask for it, otherwise…”
“What happens otherwise?” Grace and Lucy asked in unison, their eyes wide with curiosity.
Ellin replied, “Otherwise, there are countless possibilities.” She smiled cryptically and added, “Have you ever heard of quantum theory?”
“Certainly!” Grace exclaimed. “I’ve heard of it, but I’ve never met a beautiful doe explaining quantum theory. Forgive my curiosity. Also, I’m curious as to why we couldn’t enter the gate before?”
“I understand your inquiry,” Ellin replied kindly. “I’m happy to answer your questions, though my knowledge has its limits. Most likely, you couldn’t enter before because a terrible, unfortunate combination of events came along preventing your family from entering the Kingdom together. In its infinite compassion, the Universe shares in the sorrow and understands the pain your family has endured .” Ellin said apologetically and then added with a smile, “The troubles are over, as you truthfully noticed, the laws of physics and science go quite differently here, in the Kingdom!”
Grace felt relieved, realizing that everything is under control, and the mysterious laws that keep them safe and amused here, in the new world, are also recreating their beautiful reality.
“I must mention that if you had a fantasy, involving unsafe and dangerous elements, you wouldn’t be able to recreate it and enter the Kingdom,” Ellin remarked, “ This way, here in the Kingdom we guarantee the safety and the endless flow of divine creation.” At this point, Ellin stopped and apologized, “I am sorry, but I have to leave you now. Please feel at home, and I’ll see you next time!”
Ellin turned around and disappeared in the woods, with a remarkable spark of mesmerizing glow.
“I am already missing Ellin,” Lucy sighed, “I believe if she is transformed into a human she will be a beautiful princess.”
“Indeed, she is!” Mr Chevrolet nodded his head, “One of the most beautiful humans you’ll ever see! Animals of the Kingdom possess all the qualities that humans do, plus some more, for example, I can offer you a ride on my back, as a Polar Bear, while no humans could do something like this, could they? “ Mr Chevrolet noticed.
As Lucy and Grace continued their journey through the Kingdom on the back of Mr. Chevrolet, they couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement mingled with trepidation for what lay ahead. The discovery that animals were actually transformed people, added a deeper layer of complexity to their understanding of this new reality.
Grace leaned forward, breaking the silence that had settled between them. “Mr. Chevrolet, can you please explain to us more about these transformed people who can travel between human and animal forms?”
The bear turned his head slightly, his eyes filled with wisdom. “Ah, you’ve stumbled upon the most fascinating aspect of our beloved Kingdom,” he began. “The transformed people – or so called Animorphs – are indeed perfect human beings. We possess a deep connection and understanding of the natural world, and as part of evolution, we gain the remarkable ability to shape reality and travel through time.”
Grace was amazed, her curiosity growing with each word. “So, have you been able to time travel for a long time?”
Mr. Chevrolet nodded. “Indeed, time travel is a skill we have mastered over time. For reasons both personal and for the greater good, we choose to undertake certain journeys as animals, finding safety and purpose in taking on a different form. It allows us to move through time and space without arousing suspicion in the human world.”
Lucy’s eyes widened with excitement. “That means that you and Ellin could actually transform into people? “
Mr. Chevrolet chuckled warmly. “Precisely, my dear Lucy. That rabbit over there, hopping between the bushes with remarkable agility? It could very well be someone who has chosen that form for their travels. Or that wise owl perched on the tree branch? A transformed Animorph, keeping watch over the Kingdom.”
Grace marveled at the thought, her mind racing with possibilities. “What about us? Can we transform into animals too?”
The bear’s eyes softened with understanding. “Not everyone possesses this gift, my dear Grace. It is a rare ability granted only to a select few individuals who are intrinsically connected to the essence of the Kingdom. However, your presence here is not a coincidence. You have ventured through the portal, and though you may not have the power of transformation, you are still bound to this realm by a deeper purpose. Your journey holds great significance.”
Lucy listened intently, a mixture of wonder and determination evident in her eyes. “Mommy, isn’t it amazing? We may not have the power to transform, but we are still part of this magical world. We have a purpose here.”
Grace nodded, her heart filled with a sense of awe. “Yes, Lucy, it is truly remarkable. To be invited into such a world, to witness the incredible abilities of the Animorphs, and to be a part of something greater than ourselves. We are herefor a reason, and together, we will discover what that reason is.”
