The greatest power the Messers—or any destructive force in our lives—have is the power of torment. Fear, doubt, and despair paralyze us, keeping us stuck in the whirlpool.
Lucy’s journey shows us a blueprint for breaking free:
- Acknowledge the Fear, But Reject the Torment: Lucy doesn’t pretend the Messers aren’t real; she acknowledges the reality of chaos but refuses to let it control her emotions or choices.
- Focus on the Good: With her mother’s help, Lucy actively shifts her concentration away from the sources of fear and toward what is good and valuable that she can actively do—whether that is simply praying, reading scripture, or taking a single, kind action.
- The Love Anchor: The perfect love mentioned in the scripture is not just an emotion; it is an active state of belief, devotion, and alignment with the Divine purpose. It becomes the anchor that makes us immune to the Messers’ primary weapon.
Like Lucy, we can use our moments of fear as a signal—a reminder to turn to prayer, scripture, and conscious action. By dedicating our energy to collaboration and creation, we are channeling the very love that casts out fear, strengthening ourselves and continuing the essential work of building Zion, even when our world feels fractured.
